Opening the Doors: Cultivating College Access and Completion

From choosing and excelling in appropriate high school courses to financial aid advice and scholarship opportunities, the road to college is a daunting one—much more so for many minority, low-income, and first-generation college students who may not have grown up amid a college-going culture. A number of organizations have stepped in to offer a helping hand, from tutoring and mentoring to a committed support system during the college journey.
In this session, leaders of several of these initiatives will share their advice and success stories in assisting this crucial group of students with both college readiness and completion.

2015 NCCEP/GEAR UP Annual Conference
July 19–22, 2015
San Francisco, CA

AVID and GEAR UP: A Partnership Creating a Schoolwide College-Going Culture in Small Rural Schools

AVID and GEAR UP have been instrumental in supporting small rural schools committed to creating a college-going culture. Practitioners in the field, AVID District Directors, and GEAR UP Site Coordinators at AVID schools share this collaboration. Data from the College Readiness Initiative in Washington State—a project implementing AVID in public schools with high numbers of low-income students—is included. Grantees—both urban and rural—show great gains in college readiness, including significant improvement in the percentage of high school seniors with four-year, college-eligible transcripts. Takeaways also include college persistence research, AVID-GEAR UP alignments, and examples of AVID strategies.

Presenters: Matt Mallery, AVID District Director, Grandview, WA; Irma Lopez, GHS Counselor, Grandview, WA; Nikki Medved, GEAR UP Site Coordinator, Brewster, WA

AVID: A College Readiness System for All Students

The AVID and College Board programs are natural allies in the preparation of students for success in rigorous academic courses and college readiness. AVID’s system of acceleration and support not only prepares predominantly low-income and minority students for college, but is a catalyst for building a college-going culture that permeates entire schools and districts. AVID is a schoolwide and districtwide approach, featuring a college-preparatory elective course and a rigorous curriculum for students, which typically includes Pre-AP and AP courses.

Presenter: Patrick Briggs, Texas State Director, AVID Center
