White House Initiative Honors AVID as a Bright Spot in Hispanic Education

AVID was recognized at a White House event as one of the Bright Spots in Hispanic Education. Bright Spots are evidence-based programs that address key education priorities for Hispanics and are helping close the achievement gap. AVID was selected as a result of its strong data showing the impact of the AVID system on college access and completion for Hispanic students. The Bright Spots were chosen by members of the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics (WHIEEH) as part of their 25-year anniversary.

“There has been notable progress in Hispanic educational achievement, and it is due to the efforts of these Bright Spots in Hispanic Education, programs and organizations working throughout the country to help Hispanic students reach their full potential,” said Alejandra Ceja, the Executive Director for WHIEEH.

Dr. Edward Lee Vargas, AVID’s Executive Vice President and the President of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents (ALAS), was deeply moved by this award, saying, “This is a tremendous honor for AVID and for the thousands of educators who are eliminating the achievement gap every day in their classrooms. AVID is a strong college readiness system that has particular success with Hispanics, who are now the fastest growing student population in the United States. AVID ensures that our students are prepared to compete in the global economy, and by doing so secure America’s future.”
