How does one transform a school to ensure college readiness for ALL students? How can one provide opportunities for students and teachers that will improve academic performance for ALL students? Many educational ideologues have pondered and attempted to find just the right ingredients to create a recipe for school success. Three rural districts in the heartland of Florida have come pretty close to perfecting this recipe. A school transforms when the instruction, systems, leadership, and culture of the school shift, ensuring college readiness for ALL. With the help of the Investing in Innovation (i3) grant, Desoto, Hardee and Highlands County have made tremendous strides in raising the bar for students and creating a college readiness system. The middle schools, high schools, and state college in these districts have partnered with AVID Center (AVID is the acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination) in an effort to build their recipe of success.

Have you ever read an article or seen a news story about a school that is doing amazing work with its students—achieving outstanding results, forming community connections, and inspiring its educators—and you finish this story with a smile on your face, but are often left wondering, “Well, how did they do that? I want to try it.” Hearing about a school’s success is quite different from seeing it and being able to ask those folks how they’re helping their students succeed. AVID Showcases are designed to help you do exactly that.

It’s always hard getting to know your students right away. You have a few who are comfortable telling you every detail of their life (sometimes too comfortable), and others who you can’t get more than a “Hi” from. Eventually, a majority of them come around, and you have an awesome community in your classroom that builds success. Last year, I welcomed a new batch of AVID freshmen after saying goodbye to my lovely seniors. After being with them for four years, it was an adjustment for me getting used to new faces, quirks, and personalities. As always, we know that it’s an adjustment for incoming ninth graders, as well, so I did what any awesome AVID teacher would do: tons and tons and tons of team and community building activities.
